Catching The 'Bench Fever' Willingly, Happily

Bench Fever @ Proud To Be Pinoy – Everything Pinoy in this blog.By Dolly Ann Carvajal (Inquirer)

AS a true child of the'70S, I immensely enjoyed the "Bench Fever '06" underwear and denim show at the Big Dome on Friday. The sounds and sights made me feel like Austin Powers was going to pop up anytime. The stage looked like a huge psychedelic transistor radio. There was even a hippie DJ spinning records inside a golden cage.

The new Bench undies are flirty and sporty. But it also has classic white and elegant black designs. They look too good to be worn under clothes.

As in previous Bench shows, it wasn't only these that the audience had come to see, but also the celebs who did the catwalk. Some standouts were John Estrada, Keanna Reeves, Wendell Ramos, Ruffa Mae Quinto, Jay-R and Richard Gutierrez, not to mention the King and Queen of Bench—Richard and Lucy Gomez.

It was a visually delightful mixture of Kapuso and Kapamilya stars.

Ai-Ai de las Alas brought the house down, when she playfully touched the crotch of some male models.

Most enthusiastically applauded were Richard Gutierrez, Jay-R, Sam Milby, Christian Bautista, and PBB teen winners Gerald Anderson and Kim Sue Chui.

Joey Marquez and his ex-Alicia Mayer seemed to ignore each other on stage. He only had eyes for his daughter Winwin who also modeled some numbers.

The grand finale was the appearance of '70s idols Sister Sledge and Village People who sang anthems of the funky decade. It was anticlimactic, though. But all in all, it was one groovy evening. Everyone went home as "carriers" of the contagious fever.

Postscript
AT the party after the fab show, John Estrada was seen kissing a Caucasian girl. He seemed to be a kissing bandit that night; onstage, he had gamely kissed Keanna Reeves, who was obviously thrilled.

|.XPrecious Find: Vintage Aga Muhlach.
Mr.Aga Muhlach is hot again. That is one of the best things that happened at the close of 2007. .Upon the showing of his last film with Maricel Soriano last year, it became apparent that Aga Muhlach has reclaimed his old hot looks. Gone were the flabs that accentuated his tummy and the fat deposits on his face. Aga is the old matinee idol that moviegoers easily fall in love with, whether male or female, gay or straight. Shirtless pictures of Aga abound in glossy magazines and tabloids. There were also gratuitous camera shots of a half-naked Aga in Love Story+And we all said "wow" and salivated..Aga isn't really the ultimate guy for me. (Alvin Patrimonio is my ultimate man-crush.) Still, like most Filipinos, I love him. I like his dimples and the sweet smile, sure. I love the twinkling eyes and pretty boy looks. But the thing I love above all is how in spite of all his success ---in his acting career, family life or business--- the guy has remained grounded and humble. I have no memory of this guy swaggering or feeling like he is better than everybody else. There are also no bad press about him to this effect..In the third week of January of this year, I found vintage black and white photos of Aga. I do not now remember the name of the site but I remember how surprised and elated I was with my discovery. Wow. .Some of the pictures must have been taken in the early 1980s when Aga was still young and trying to break into showbusiness. Other pics must have been taken in the early to middles 1990s when "ST" (short for "sex trip") films were still en vogue. Aga was constrained to accept roles in bold or ST films because his popularity then dipped, after having been involved in disastrous love affairs. .After that dark period in his life, Aga emerged as a credible, valuable and award-winning actor. Though he may still have been ambling from being typecast as the boy-next-door, he provided such roles with depth. He made his characters human ---flawed but lovable--- and not simply like mannequins or Ken dolls that women (or girls) should blindly adore. Of his many films, May Minamahal (with Aiko Melendez), Dahil May Isang Ikaw (with Regine Velasquez) and Sana Maulit Muli (Lea Salonga) are my favorites. .Of his contemporaries in the bagets era from the 1980s, only Aga (SpeciMen 05) and Albert Martinez (SpeciMen 02) remain in the business. Aga's ability to survive in an otherwise competitive, gruelling and oftentimes cruel industry is a testament to the strength of his conviction, the goodness of his heart and the simple fact that he has the talent for it. .And I must admit it. Even if Aga looks good and hunky again, it is still a far cry to how he looked like ten or twenty years ago. Youth, really, is difficult to reclaim no matter what health regimen we follow or how much exercise we do. That is why I am so glad to have found these pictures. I never cut clippings of Aga's pictures when I was young. I am pleased that someone did the dirty job for me. .Copy and related rights to photographs and digital images appearing herein pertain to their respective authors, photographers and copyright owners.
